Customers at a shop in Vagator got more than they bargained for on Tuesday when an ongoing street duel between two stray cattle took an unexpected turn, ending with one of the animals crashing through the shop's glass entrance and barging inside.
What began as a routine day of business quickly descended into chaos as the stray bovine, apparently losing ground in its confrontation with another animal outside, charged through the glass door and into the establishment, scattering goods and damaging property in the process.
The shop owner, who was attending to customers at the time, watched in disbelief as the uninvited visitor transformed the premises into an unlikely extension of the cattle battleground.
Fortunately, despite the dramatic intrusion and shattered glass, no injuries were reported.
The incident has once again brought into sharp focus the growing menace of stray cattle in Anjuna and the surrounding areas. Residents say the problem worsens during the monsoon months, when wandering cattle are frequently seen on roads, market areas and public spaces, creating hazards for motorists, pedestrians and businesses alike.
Local residents have urged the village panchayat to move beyond paperwork and implement the provisions of the memorandum of understanding already signed with a gaushala for the relocation and management of stray cattle.
"For now, everyone escaped unharmed. But next time the damage may not be limited to a broken glass door and scattered merchandise," a resident remarked.
The unusual episode has left many wondering whether Vagator's shopkeepers now need protection not only from theft and bad weather, but also from unexpected bovine break-ins.
