Goa Police's Cyber Crime sleuths have arrested a 42-year-old man from Ahmedabad for allegedly attempting to access and trade sensitive personal data online using cryptocurrency transactions.
The accused, identified as Vishal Gohil, was arrested from Calangute on Wednesday with an FIR registered under Section 66 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Details shared by Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) Rahul Gupta states that preliminary findings reveal that Gohil was trying to purchase confidential data and offer it for sale via encrypted platforms such as Telegram. The payment channels were routed through cryptocurrency to conceal the transactions.
"Gohil is currently in custody and further investigation is underway to verify the extent of data accessed, trace financial trails and identity any co-conspirators or digital platforms used in the crime," he added.
Goa Police have urged the public to remain alert to suspicious online activity and report cyber offences to the Cyber Crime Police Station in Ribandar or call the helpline 1930.
