After a spell of weak monsoon activity for nearly ten days, Goa is expected to witness a surge in rainfall from June 12 to June 16, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa issuing an Orange alert from June 12-14.

IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning during this period. A Yellow alert is currently in place, warning of thunderstorms and lightning that are likely to continue across the State till June 15.

The rainfall revival is linked to a meteorological development over peninsular India. “The trough from north Tamil Nadu to south Maharashtra coast now runs as a shear zone roughly along latitude 15°N over the Indian region between 3.1 to 4.5 km above mean sea level,” the IMD stated.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds with speeds reaching 30-40 kmph, gusting to 50 kmph, are forecast across both North and South Goa from June 10 to 15.

“Widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on June 12-15, heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on June 13-14 and heavy rainfall (without the accompanying thunderstorms and lightning) at isolated places on June 16 is expected,” it added.
