FINAL JOURNEY: A large crowd converged at the Mapusa church cemetery on Monday evening as Samuel Braganza was laid to rest amid scenes of grief and emotion.

Amid prayers, tears and an overwhelming show of solidarity, 22-year-old college student Samuel Braganza, whose alleged suicide has sparked outrage across Goa, was laid to rest on Monday evening at St Jerome Church cemetery in Mapusa.
Hundreds of mourners – including family members, relatives, friends, neighbours, community leaders and people from different faiths and walks of life – gathered to bid a final farewell to the young man whose untimely death has stirred widespread debate on the consequences of public shaming and the handling of minor offences.
Earlier in the day, Samuel's mortal remains were brought to his residence, where a steady stream of mourners paid their respects and offered condolences to the grieving family.
The funeral came after days of anguish and uncertainty. Family members had initially refused to accept the body, demanding action against police officials whom they accused of subjecting Samuel to intense questioning and causing him mental trauma over what they described as a minor offence.
Samuel allegedly took his own life after reportedly coming under severe mental stress following the circulation of a viral social media video showing him dumping garbage in a public place and the subsequent registration of an FIR against him by the police.
During the funeral Mass, the concelebrating priest reflected on the tragedy, describing Samuel's death as a loss not only to his family but to society as a whole.
In a poignant message, the priest spoke about the power and responsibility that come with the use of social media, urging people to use digital platforms constructively rather than in ways that can devastate lives and families.
"He was not just a loss to his family but to society," the priest said, while appealing to the congregation to reflect on the impact of online actions and public condemnation.
Emotions ran high when a close family member delivered a heartfelt eulogy, remembering Samuel as a compassionate and gentle young man who always chose to see the good in others.
"He had grown into a fine 22-year-old young man, but for us he was still our baby, always cheerful and always wishing well for everyone around him," she said.
Recalling the values instilled in him by his family, she described Samuel as soft-spoken, humble and deeply caring – qualities that endeared him to everyone who knew him.
The large turnout at the funeral, cutting across religious and social boundaries, stood as a testament to the affection and goodwill that Samuel had earned within the community.
Many mourners remained visibly emotional throughout the service, while others quietly comforted the bereaved family.
As dusk settled over Mapusa and the final prayers were recited, tears flowed freely as Samuel's body was lowered into the grave. The gathering stood in silence, paying their last respects to a life cut tragically short.
While the last rites have now been performed, the family's demand for accountability and justice remains unresolved.
Even as they bid farewell to their son, relatives reiterated that their quest for answers and action against those they hold responsible for the circumstances leading to his death is far from over.
