MARGAO
Well-known tiatr artiste and performer Robert Paulo Martins from Brittona passed away on January 20, 2026, leaving Goa’s tiatr fraternity and cultural community in deep mourning.
He was 54. Born on September 7, 1971, Martins was widely regarded as a young-spirited, energetic, and versatile performer who made a lasting contribution to Konkani tiatr through acting, singing, and live stage performance.
A talented tiatrist, singer, and actor, Martins acted regularly in tiatrs staged at the Kala Academy and other venues across Goa. He began gaining recognition after participating in tiatr competitions, notably acting under the direction of Derrick D’Mello at the Kala Academy Tiatr Competition in the year 2000, where the tiatr Kallokhi Uzvadd was staged. He continued to remain active in the tiatr movement over the years.
Martins acted in several tiatrs, including Vadoll, Teag, and Tumcho Sangat between 2010 and 2013. In recent years, he performed under tiatrist Fr. Milroy Rodrigues, acting in productions such as The Healing House (2025), Daddy’s Home (2024), Tum Naslo Tor (2023), and The Prison Ministry (2022).
Apart from professional tiatr stages, Martins was a familiar presence in village tiatrs, where he participated regularly during annual feasts and celebrations, particularly during the feast of Our Lady of Penha de França. He also acted in tiatrs staged by Bondkonn and performed roles written by Mathew Fernandes. He was especially remembered for his comedy performances and comedy duets with his sister Rosalina Martins, which were well received by audiences.
What set Robert Daulo Martins apart was his rare ability to compose and sing songs on the spot during live performances, effortlessly creating lyrics and tunes on stage, a talent that earned him admiration from both audiences and fellow artistes.
Reacting to his passing, Anthony Barbosa, President of the Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG), along with the TAG Council, expressed shock at the sudden loss. “Robert was a known artiste on the Konkani tiatr stage, especially for his acting at tiatr competitions. He has inspired many young artistes,” Barbosa said.
Martins’ passing marks a significant loss to the tiatr community. He is mourned by his family, friends, and the wider cultural fraternity.
