The Tourism Department has temporarily suspended the licence of Shack No. 16 at the Calangute-Umtavaddo beach stretch after its staff allegedly assaulted Bengaluru tourists on Tuesday.
The Tourist Police Unit had submitted a report to the department regarding the incident stating the attack was unprovoked. The department officials stated the shack staff used iron rods and sharp objects, causing grievous injuries and triggering panic in the crowded beach area.
“Investigations revealed that the management of the shack, including individuals identified as Stanley Coutinho and Rohit, participated directly in the assault. Both individuals are noted by law enforcement as habitual offenders with prior criminal records at the Calangute Police Station,” it said.
Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte condemned the incident, stating that such behaviour has no place in Goa. He added that police have already taken action and strict steps will be taken and that the government will make sure such incidents are not repeated while Director Kedar Naik said the incident constituted a serious violation of the Goa State Shack Policy and the Goa Tourist Places Protection and Maintenance Act.
The department has summoned the shack licensee, Francisco Rosario, for a hearing on March 30. Authorities said further action including permanent cancellation of the licence and forfeiture of security deposits is under consideration.
