Panaji mayor Rohit Monserrate has initiated talks with local members of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) to explore rebuilding the Mangrove Boardwalk along the Ourem creek.

Monserrate said the meeting provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives and discuss avenues for reviving the project.

“Held a constructive discussion with members of CREDAI Goa on the possibility of reconstructing the Mangrove Boardwalk and exploring potential avenues for its revival,” he posted on his Facebook page.

The boardwalk, one of the first works executed under the Smart City project, was gutted in a fire last month. The blaze, suspected to have been caused by dry vegetation catching fire, destroyed large portions of the wooden structure.

The incident had drawn sharp criticism from residents and environmentalists, who had hailed the walkway as a rare eco-tourism initiative showcasing mangroves along the creek.

The boardwalk had quickly become a popular attraction, offering visitors a chance to experience the mangrove ecosystem up close.

Monserrate’s outreach to CREDAI indicates the keenness to rebuild and restore the facility, despite the civic body's initial hesitance in view of the costs.
