The Crime Branch of Goa Police inspected 48 scrapyards across the State and verified 172 workers, including women labourers, during a State-wide verification drive on a single day, on Wednesday.

The exercise is to identify illegal immigrants and persons staying or working without valid documents.

SP Crime Rahul Gupta said that nine teams were deployed simultaneously across Goa that carried out inspections at Mapusa, Colvale, Porvorim, Betim, Margao, Davorlim, Dicarpale, Zuarinagar and Cortalim, among other locations.

During the drive, police personnel verified the identity documents and particulars of workers and labourers employed at the scrapyards as part of preventive policing and internal security measures.

“Owners and managers of the establishments were instructed to maintain proper records of workers, verify identity documents before employment and immediately report any suspicious persons or activities to the police,” the officer said adding that the verification drive will continue on Thursday.
