The Konkani tiatr fraternity is in mourning following the demise of noted writer, director and producer Cruz Pinto (58), a respected figure from Baradi-Tolleakanto-Velim, known for his family-oriented dramas and strong social messages.
Operating under his banner, CP Production, Cruz carved a niche for himself by presenting tiatrs that blended entertainment with introspection. His productions, especially during the Lenten season, focused on contemporary social issues such as strained parent-child relationships, the impact of modernisation, and the importance of respecting elders. He consistently targeted themes relevant to modern youth and family dynamics.
One of his most talked-about works was “Xik Aikpak, Aik Xikpak” (2017), his sixth tiatr, which revolved around a couple and their only son. The drama highlighted love, family bonds and the consequences of selfish decisions, delivering a strong moral message that children must learn to listen to their parents. Another notable production, “Ghatki Judas,” written and directed by him, was evaluated at the TOI Lenten Tiatr Festival.
Cruz began his journey in tiatr as a singer with Agnelo de Borim’s troupe, rendering songs in several productions before moving into acting and later writing and direction. Over the years, he collaborated with artistes such as Rosario de Benaulim, Roma and Comedian Selvy. His dialogues were widely appreciated for being apt and situation-based, while his comedy remained clean and free from vulgarity.
In August 2025, Cruz was felicitated for his contribution to tiatr at a charity show in Margao.
Expressing shock at his passing, Anthony Barbosa, President of the Tiatr Academy of Goa, said, “He was truly a legend on the tiatr stage. He not only produced high-standard tiatrs but was always in the forefront, encouraging newcomers by helping them write new tiatrs.”
With his demise, Goa has lost a committed tiatrist whose work sought to guide, educate and inspire through the stage.
