Just when the controversy over naming of the Calangute beach circle was beginning to die down, another circle near the church has stirred another controversy.
People have taken objection to the name “Balle” displayed at the beautified circle in front of the St Alex church in the beach village.
Raising a banner of protest, former panchayat member Sudesh Mayekar said many people raised a hue and cry over the builder’s name which was displayed at the Calangute beach circle because the name was in big letters.
“Here in this circle opposite the church the name “Balle” is in small letters and that is why not many noticed it. Now, people have approached me and requested to ensure that this name also needs to go,” Mayenkar said.
He said the circle may have been sponsored by Balle but keeping the name for one-and-half year is too long a time.
He said the local sarpanch and the MLA should ensure that the name is immediately removed.
“The circle is in front of the St Alex Church. The parish priest and the PPC members should be consulted and a suitable name should be put for the circle,” Mayenkar said and suggested naming it as “Calangute church square” or “St Alex circle”.
He stressed that its important to preserve the local culture and ‘Calangutkarpon’.
He warned that the name be removed by next Sunday if not he will personally ensure and remove the name.
“I don’t mind to go behind the bars to preserve our culture,” he said.
