Two youth from Zuarinagar were killed on the spot after the bike they were riding collided with an Innova taxi on the internal Cuelim-Verna road on Sunday evening. The tragic accident has raised fresh concerns over speeding on newly tarred roads.
The deceased have been identified as Venkatesh Basar (21) and Rakesh Sankappanavar (24), both residents of Zuarinagar. They were travelling on an Access bike towards Verna from Zuarinagar when they crashed into an Innova taxi that was coming from the opposite direction carrying tourists.
The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in both riders succumbing to their injuries at the site of the crash itself.
Social worker Roquezinho Dsouza, who rushed to the site, said that while the road was recently improved, it should not become a reason for reckless driving.
“The road was earlier in a very bad condition and residents had been raising concerns that such conditions could lead to accidents. Following repeated requests, especially before the Three Kings feast of Remedios Church at Cuelim, the road was tarred. However, people must not misuse the improved road for speeding. This stretch is often used as a shortcut between Zuarinagar and Verna, and drivers need to be cautious,” Dsouza said.
MLA Anton Vas, who also visited the accident site, urged motorists to exercise restraint while driving on the stretch.
“The road has been recently tarred, but it is relatively narrow and lined with thick vegetation and trees on both sides. People should avoid speeding and drive carefully, especially on such internal roads,” Vas said.
Verna police reached the spot soon after the accident and carried out a panchanama. Further investigation is in progress to ascertain the exact cause of the crash.
