Vasco traffic cell books 13 for modified bike silencers in special drive

PANAJI: The Vasco Traffic Cell in Vasco has booked 13 cases against two-wheelers fitted with modified silencers during a special enforcement drive aimed at tackling noise and sound pollution in the city.

The cases were registered under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which carries a fine of up to Rs 10,000 for operating vehicles with altered exhaust systems that exceed permissible noise limits.

Traffic Police Inspector Alvito Rodrigues said the crackdown is part of an ongoing campaign to restore peace in residential and market areas. “Modified silencers cause extreme disturbance, especially in congested areas and late at night. These alterations are not only illegal but a nuisance to the public. We will continue to take strict action,” he said.

Rodrigues urged motorists to avoid such modifications and adhere to legal standards. “Our aim is not to penalise unnecessarily, but to ensure roads remain safe and free from excessive noise. We appeal to riders to remove modified silencers and help maintain a peaceful environment,” he added.

The drive will continue in the coming days.
