It is truly shocking and deeply disturbing to see MLA Viresh Borkar and the protesters being dragged out of the TCP office without dignity or respect, especially when they are trying to protect their village and environment. If an elected MLA can be pulled down the staircase in such a manner by the Goa Police, what protection remains for the common citizen?
It is disheartening that such incidents create the impression that those in power are misusing authority to silence their own people. There are growing concerns that false FIRs are being filed and that public voices are being suppressed for political or financial gain. Many feel that the government must listen more carefully to its citizens and respect court orders and democratic processes.
The MLAs of Goa should remember that the public is becoming more aware and vocal. The strength of the common man should never be underestimated.
It appears that whenever the government feels challenged, police action follows. This has led to a decline in public trust, as many believe the police are protecting the powerful rather than ordinary citizens. For the sake of Goa’s future, justice, human rights and the rule of law must always be upheld.
