The Goa Pradesh Youth Congress (GPYC) on Wednesday staged a protest against what it termed the growing unemployment crisis among Goans, demanding immediate steps from the state government to create job opportunities for local youth.
The demonstration, led by GPYC president Archit Naik, was held near Azad Maidan in Panaji. However, police stopped the protesters as they attempted to march to Chief Minister’s Official residence at Altinho, citing law-and-order concerns. Police later detained five protesters, including Naik, to prevent any escalation.
AICC secretary co-incharge Goa Anjali Nimbalkar, party president Amit Patkar and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao were also part of the protest, which was held soon after the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected GPYC members.
Addressing the media, GPYC leaders said the agitation was aimed at drawing attention to the lack of employment opportunities for Goan youth. They accused the state government of failing to protect jobs for locals despite repeated assurances and policy promises.
“The government has repeatedly claimed that employment opportunities will be prioritised for Goans, but the ground reality is completely different,” GPYC leaders alleged, adding that educated youth were being forced to look outside the state for livelihoods.
The Youth Congress demanded that the government take immediate and concrete measures to tackle unemployment and ensure jobs for Goans across sectors. Warning of further action, the GPYC said the agitation would be intensified if their demands continue to be ignored by the government.
