Goa needs to prioritise sustainable tourism

Goa’s tourism image has taken a beating in recent times. News of pub brawls, harassment of tourists for selfies, poor infrastructure, and environmental degradation has tarnished the state’s reputation. In the late 1980s and 1990s, Goa was a highly sought-after destination for foreign travellers who came to enjoy its pristine beaches, relaxed atmosphere, and warm, welcoming locals. Though the hippie culture thrived back then, visitors were generally respectful and appreciated the value Goa offered. Today, the focus appears to be on numbers rather than quality. Officials often boast about rising tourist arrivals, but quantity alone does not translate into success. Goa’s image as merely a “party destination” or “backpacker hub” is limiting its true potential. What the state needs now is a conscious shift toward attracting quality tourists — those who value peace, cleanliness, culture, and authenticity, and are willing to spend more when they see genuine value for money. To achieve this, Goa must prioritise sustainable tourism by improving beach cleanliness, preserving its environment, upgrading infrastructure, and promoting community awareness. Reviving the friendly Goan spirit and hospitality that once defined the state’s tourism experience is essential.
