NGOs and activists must be protected

In a country as vast and populous as India, the role of NGOs and activists cannot be overstated.  NGOs and activists serve as the eyes and ears of the system, highlighting crucial issues, holding authorities accountable, and providing essential services to those in need. In Goa, a state known for its natural beauty and vibrant civil society, NGOs and activists are facing unprecedented challenges. Animal welfare organizations, which play a crucial role in managing the stray dog population through sterilization programs, are grappling with delayed funding, putting the entire initiative at risk. Meanwhile, activists fighting against the exploitation of land and forests are facing constant threats, which have recently turned violent. This trend is alarming and has far-reaching implications for our democracy. If NGOs and activists, who are the guardians of our rights and interests, are threatened and silenced, who will hold the powerful accountable? A developed nation cannot function if its most vulnerable voices are suppressed and its watchdogs are muzzled. It is imperative that the government recognizes the invaluable contribution of NGOs and activists and takes concrete steps to protect them from threats.
