The offshore casinos anchored at the mouth of the River Mandovi are causing severe congestion and obstructing the free flow of marine traffic. These floating gambling hubs should be removed from the river and replaced with cruise liners along the navigable stretch.
The Goa State Pollution Control Board has reported E. coli levels around the casinos at nearly twice the permissible limit, raising concerns about marine pollution and the safety of fish and other catch since 2022.
Critics also point out that nearly 90% of casino employees are recruited from the North-East, leaving limited employment opportunities for Goans. Local businesses say they see little benefit from casino visitors, while taxi operators claim they lose potential fares because casinos run their own transport.
Residents along Dayanand B. Bandodkar Marg complain that night-time activity linked to casinos has led to unhygienic roadside food stalls and increased disturbance, particularly near St. Tome.
