Act against duplicate voters on rolls

JERRY FERNANDES, Saligao | 02nd December, 08:06 pm

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sanjay Goel on Sunday has announced that nearly 90,000 names will be removed from the first draft electoral roll as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process enters its final stage. Well, these 90,000 people could be mostly Goans from the minority community who must have acquired Portuguese passports and gone in the UK/other European countries for employment. Is this what the BJP was waiting for, to delete the names of people as a punishment for voting against the BJP? Today, a large number of people from neighbouring states are seen roaming around with multiple voting cards and illegally voting here in Goa, as well as in their native places during elections. Now, what is the CEO's office doing to identify such people and what action is it planning to take? Well, if the ongoing SIR exercise has really been brought to identify duplicate voters in the state then the CEOs office should identify and take strict action against all migrants with multiple voting cards and voting not just in Goa but also in their native places during elections.
