An alternative area needed for Ashtami fair

SRIDHAR D'IYER, Caranzalem | 25th August, 06:45 pm

On Aug 23, a private bus crashed into some stalls that are set-up for the ongoing Ashtami fair opposite the Panaji market. After injuring three persons and crushing a parked 2-wheeler, the bus came to a halt at the bus stop. Being early morning, there was no crowd else there would have been more casualties. The driver claims to have lost control due to brake failure. The truth would come out if this was the case or he was speeding or was on the mobile which can be checked through tracking. The fair is annual affair and attracts a huge crowd who throng to buy for the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi. The spot where the incident occurred is a at a blind curve, and even during normal days it is difficult to cross the road. Here the traffic lights are non-functional for years nor traffic cops to help the pedestrians and motorists. An alternative place for the Ashtami fair will be the Kala Academy grounds where several exhibitions and programmes are held. There is ample space for more stalls, parking lot, a canteen, not suffocating being airy and with enough places to put one’s tired feet up. Hopefully next year the authorities would consider shifting the fair within the premises of the Kala Academy for a safer and enjoyable experience for the visitors.
