It is reported that Atanu Chakraborty, Chairman of HDFC, resigned due to management decisions “not in congruence with my personal values and ethics”. I am glad that someone of stature has the courage and moral fibre to state this openly. The RBI has mandated banks to provide doorstep services to senior citizens. As a super senior citizen, I find that a bank which prides itself on service (“we understand your world”) denies me this unless I maintain a high minimum balance, which I cannot. From 1st April, the bank also intends to limit UPI transactions to the number of permitted debit card withdrawals.
This gap in the implementation of laws, rules, and basic humanity is visible everywhere — from Parliament, where laws are made, to how they are applied and followed. Ordinances are passed amid chaos by voice vote. The Allahabad High Court notes a distinction between law and morality in allowing separate live-in arrangements. In Goa, the land conversions continue despite public protests, damaging our fragile landscape with little regard for nature or residents, while favouring tourism and moneyed interests. The Panaji municipal results reflect a contradiction — people oppose casinos and overdevelopment, yet vote for those enabling them. This Holy Week reminds us: “What doth it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul.”
