Governance failures in Goa call for accountability

ALWYN FERNANDES, Benaulim | MAY 14, 2025, 08:15 PM IST

While the judiciary has given citizens hope by intervening to tackle rising encroachments on comunidade lands and illegal structures in Goa, the challenge of finding surveyors raises questions about the politics at play. This is particularly concerning after the Bhutani protest, which sparked widespread demonstrations and highlighted the saturation point citizens had reached. Recent demolitions of illegal structures, which took 7 to 35 years and judicial intervention, underscore the governance failures. Illegalities fall within the purview of governance, and members of the legislative assembly and parliament are accountable for this. Their role also includes conducting periodic audits of village panchayats and municipal corporations. Instead of ensuring clean governance, MLAs seem more focused on organizing events. I hope they understand that we didn't vote for event managers.
