In a bid to ensure public safety during the monsoon season, the Margao Municipal Council has reportedly initiated emergency services to handle emergency situations arising during the monsoon. The 24-hour control room has been set up at the South Goa District Collectorate Office, to oversee emergency operations for Salcete taluka. The emergency services will be operational with two teams of municipal staff working in shifts. Each team comprises six workers, a supervisor, a driver, a vehicle, two tree cutters, shovels, picks, and other necessary equipment. Just a day after setting up emergency services, it came in handy to clear debris following a wall collapse in Gogol on Wednesday. It must be said that the disaster management service set up by the Margao civic body is an important step and needs to be introduced in other municipalities. Two landslides were reported in Vasco while trees fell at four locations due to strong rains. Attending to the emergency cases can put a lot of pressure on fire services personnel as they have to attend to distress calls at different places. In such instances disaster management services set up by the civic body can come in handy.
