It is learnt that talathis were reportedly ordered to inspect and report hill-cutting exercises and construction activities and other works within their jurisdiction which are carried out in continuous manner, including on Saturdays, Sundays and on holidays. The order has also asked the talathis to submit a consolidated report regarding the illegal activities to the collector. It is prudent to stop illegal hill-cutting activities in the state in order to avoid loss of lives and properties due to landslides and natural disasters. A lot of damage has already been done since a significant amount of illegal hill-cutting activities have been taking place for a long time. Several housing projects have already come up on hill slopes. Be that as it may, it is also necessary to undo the damage that has already been done by the hill-cutting activities. We need to rehabilitate the hills and forests that have been destroyed as a result of man’s greed. Reforestation is the process of regenerating or replanting forest areas that have been destroyed or damaged for the benefits of mankind. Reforesting areas of degraded ecosystems are the key factors for sustainable development.
