Original Goans: Time for a logical quiz

RAJESH BANAULIKAR, Arpora | JUNE 26, 2021, 11:16 PM IST

When we talk about Goans and non-Goans, how do we define "original Goan"? Is it by birth or a person who is residing in Goa for 15 years or more?

Some can debate saying that a person who is born in Goa is genuine Goan. But this logic is not enough to prove that a person born in Goa is "original Goan" by birth.

Original Goan must be connected with the last four to five generations -- father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather etc.

One's birth is not enough to prove that anyone is genuine and original Goan!

Now, let's define Goa. According to history this State was named by Portuguese as Goa. Before naming Goa, this State was known as "Gomantak" meaning land of fertile soil and paradise.

There are more meanings also. So Gomantak becomes original name of the State Goa?

Gomanta was a kingdom mentioned in the Mahabharata. It was an extension of the kingdom of Yadavas at Dwaraka. It is identified to be the Goa state of India, situated in the western coast.

Do we find anyone with surname of Gomantakar or Gomantak or Gomant? We are indeed lucky to have a State like Goa or Gomantak.
