The Konkan Railway (KR) on Friday announced that it will be replacing two of its sleeper coaches with economy three-tier AC coaches in two trains -- Mumbai-Madgaon Mandovi Express and Mumbai-Madgaon Konkan Kanya Express -- on a permanent basis from February next year.
This is a move in the right direction. Long distance trains usually have only four three-tier AC coaches and it is virtually impossible to get confirmed booking even a month prior to departure. This move will not impact the non AC sleeper coach passengers as many from this category wish to travel by AC but are compelled to travel by non AC coaches due to paucity of AC seats. Moreover, this move will attract AC bus travelers as the fare by train is much lower, and travel more comfortable.
The middle class Indian is now much better off today. Recently, my building watchman took his family to his home town by 3-tier AC coach. He explained that he travels only once a year with his family and would like a comfortable journey. Indians now want more comfort while travelling and can afford to pay the price. Hence, the railways must go in for 3-tier AC coaches in a big way.
