It seems that authorities have finally sprung into action following the accidental deaths of two bikers near Kannewal Junction at Bethora in Ponda. It is learnt that staff from various departments visited the site to test the traffic signal system that was installed nearly one-and-a-half months ago but remained inactive. According to the locals the signal system was a long pending demand of over two years and is now expected to be operational within the next two days.
It appears that a fatal road accident seems necessary to wake up the authorities and act. On the contrary the authorities need to be proactive in preventing road accidents by taking necessary steps. In order to proactively prevent accidents it is necessary to focus on identifying and mitigating potential hazards before they cause harm. This includes regular inspections, risk assessments and fostering a strong safety culture.
Authorities need to be proactive in preventing road accidents by focusing on infrastructure improvements, strict law enforcement, and public awareness campaigns. The measures include designing safer roads, implementing effective traffic management systems, and educating the public on safe driving practices. Proper road engineering including lane widths, proper street lighting and signage are of utmost importance. It is necessary to identify and address accident-prone areas (black spots) through infrastructure improvements such as installing speed-breakers, rumblers and pedestrian crossings. Steps need to be taken to reduce road congestion.
There needs to be strict enforcement of traffic laws in order to ensure drivers adhere to traffic rules, such as speed limits, seat belt usage, and restrictions on mobile phone use. Automated technologies like speed cameras need to be used regularly. There needs to be implementation of comprehensive public awareness campaigns on road safety, targeting all road users and pedestrians. By implementing proactive measures the government can create a safer environment and minimize the risk of accidents. As the saying goes ‘a stitch in time saves nine’.
