The soundless echoes of a tragedy

It is not only the person who dies but his loved ones too who die a thousand deaths with him

The soundless echoes of a tragedy

As humans, we cannot be oblivious to the fact that things have a way of unfolding themselves.

As we might have seen, situations and events tend to develop and progress naturally, often in unexpected ways, implying that while we may have plans and expectations, life often charts its own course and surprises us along the way.

But it is when things take a turn for the worse, and when least expected, that we begin to attach some amount of significance to this argument and commence looking at things from that perspective.

Nothing is as uncertain as life. It is a variable with its own share of possibilities and unknowns. However, the ability to anticipate future events or outcomes lie in the realms of the unforeseen.

Nostradamus the French astrologer best known for his book ‘Les Propheties’, a collection of 942 poetic quatrains allegedly predicting future, and published in 1555, may have been an exception who continues to amaze the world with the uncanny nature of his predictions even today.

Paul ‘the Octopus’ gained widespread popularity for correctly predicting the results of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Man’s penchant for knowing the future; his keen interest to know what life ‘beyond this moment’ holds for him in store, is unparalleled. We just refuse to believe that no one can definitely predict our future with absolute certainty. But our quest in that direction never shows signs of waning!

With the mists of uncertainty fogging our senses, a predictable fear of the future is a common response we experience. But at some point of time or the other we have to reconcile ourselves to the fact that death is the only certainty.

A man born has to die! It is an inevitable part of the natural cycle of life. As a fundamental aspect of existence, ‘death is a constant companion or shadow that shapes our lives and how we experience them’.

One cannot be oblivious to the fact that individuals are not always in complete control of their destinies; unexpected events and circumstances can significantly impact their paths.

A recent post which has gone viral on social media wakes up one to the palpable absurdities of life.

“Life is so unpredictable. You go for a vacation and terrorists shoot you. You go to a trophy parade and it ends in a stampede. You go on a flight for work or vacation, and it crashes. You are studying in your hostel, and the plane falls on you. No warning, no script; one moment you are dreaming, the next you are a memory.”

As rightly mentioned, it is just tragic how every single death has happened when the people who died never thought they could die in this way.

Nothing could be farther from the truth! The series of recent happenings across the country serves to remind one that death can at times be very cruel.

In a chilling turn of fate, tragedy struck Ahmedabad as an Air India flight bound for London Gatwick Airport crashed shortly after take-off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

It is being described as the world’s worst aviation disaster in a decade with casualties which include both passengers on the plane and victims on the ground.

The Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed into BJ Medical College hostel in Ahmedabad killing several medical students besides injuring several others. Many others are reported missing.

The tragic mishap has revived memories of a major air disaster that took place in the Gujarat city in 1988, and which claimed the lives of 133 of the 135 people on board. On a foggy morning in October that year, Indian Airlines Flight 113, a Boeing 737, met with catastrophe as it attempted to land at Ahmedabad airport. (Excerpts from ‘Indian Express’)

As the media brings out heart-rendering tales of lives lost and miraculously spared, one can only wonder at the frailty of humanity. It is only after such tragedies strike that the limitations and vulnerabilities of human beings are laid threadbare.

While efforts are on to assess the causes of the fatal Air India crash, it is sure to spark aviation safety debates. The press and the media are already throwing up several speculations about the crash and the probable causes.

As the staggering death toll continues to numb the nation, it is however the families and close relatives of those who have lost their lives in the devastating crash who will have to acknowledge the reality of the situation and find a way to live with it.

It is difficult to accept the death of someone dear. The emotional pain associated with the loss of a loved one is more agonizing than anything imagined.

While the death itself is undoubtedly a significant event, the ongoing process of mourning, accepting the loss, and adapting to a new reality can be intensely challenging and emotionally draining.

It is not only the person who dies but his loved ones too who die a thousand deaths with him!

As a pall of gloom descends on the nation, the only consolation is the saga of the sole survivor -- the passenger in seat 11A --  who’s ready presence of mind helped him survive the crash miraculously.

Investigations into the unfortunate incident have begun in earnest.

Whatever the findings, the fact remains that it is not the traumatic event but rather the lingering effects, memories, or consequences of the tragedy that will continue to assail the nation at pains to come to terms with the enormity of the horrific crash.

The soundless echoes of the tragedy will continue to be heard long after the wounds have healed!
