BJP celebrates Bengal poll win in every constituency

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | 09th May, 11:10 pm

When the Lotus bloomed in West Bengal, the BJP celebrated its unprecedented victory not only in the state capital but across the state. If ruling party sources are to be believed, the party leadership directed its cadres to hold victory rallies in every constituency. While the celebrations are understandable given the BJP’s first major win in West Bengal, political observers are trying to determine whether there is more to it than meets the eye — especially in the context of the upcoming Assembly polls in Goa. For, when the TMC attempted to make a significant entry into Goa in 2022, the party faced strong backlash from the BJP, which portrayed Mamata Banerjee as anti-Hindu. Any questions?

Wooing of Cong MLAs ahead
of polls major talking point

Is there any attempt underway to woo members of the Congress Legislature Party ahead of the upcoming Assembly election? The question has become a major talking point both within Congress circles and outside over the last few days. Congress Legislature Party leader and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has neither confirmed nor denied the speculation doing the rounds in political circles. Yet, several questions remain unanswered — foremost among them: why would there be any need to woo MLAs when the state is barely eight months away from the polls? The curiosity, understandably, continues to grow. You know why.

Cong sets sights on regaining
control of Balli panchayat

It was a week in which the Congress duo of Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao and Quepem MLA Altone D'Costa appeared to have stalled an attempt to unseat the Balli Deputy Sarpanch. While the Balli Panchayat is headed by BJP district president Prabhakar Gaonkar, the Deputy Sarpanch belongs to the Congress. After thwarting the move to dislodge the Deputy Sarpanch, the Yuri-Altone combine is now learnt to have initiated a counter-strategy — one aimed at regaining control of the Balli Panchayat. Clearly, the political battle in Balli is far from over. Watch this space.

Churchill still not happy after
Court order in ED case

Why is Varca strongman Churchill Alemao not happy with the High Court order in the Enforcement Directorate case linked to the Louis Berger matter? Churchill told the media that he is not happy because he believes he was falsely implicated in the case. But political observers suspect there could be more to his unhappiness. Churchill has pointed out that while he had to undergo incarceration in connection with the case, others allegedly involved escaped unscathed. That, perhaps, explains the lingering resentment. Interesting, isn’t it?

Vijai's move for assessment of
Goa's realities sparks curiosity

Vijai Sardesai’s decision to engage an agency to conduct a rational assessment of Goa’s political ground realities ahead of the Assembly election has sparked considerable curiosity in political circles. One question doing the rounds is this: if the assessment delivers a positive signal, would Vijai attempt a state wide expansion model similar to that adopted by TVK Vijay in Tamil Nadu? Equally intriguing is how the Goa Forward Party would strategise if the survey reveals pockets of strong traction in select regions rather than across the state. Any questions?
