BJP treads cautiously on Gaude’s outburst, keeping ST vote in mind

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | JUNE 01, 2025, 12:16 AM IST

Has the BJP leadership preferred to tread a cautious path when local leaders were quick to mull action against Sports Minister Govindbab Gaude over his May 25 outbursts at the Tribal Welfare Department? Well, political observers say the ST community had been the party’s voter base over the years. With as many as three elections lining up in the State, beginning with the Zilla Panchayat polls later this year, local party leadership has sounded caution over the Gaude episode at least for the moment. For, the BJP will be eyeing on ST vote, more so when the political reservations for the STs are expected to become a reality in 2027. Any questions?

Vijai’s birthday bash on June 14 likely to pack a political punch

What’s lining up in Fatorda on June 14, the birthday of Goa Forward chief Vijaibab Sardesai, is a question doing the rounds in political circles. Well, with the Municipal polls due in early 2026 followed by the Assembly election in 2027, sources at the Dovondem bandh say the Goa Forward leadership is planning something big on June 14. Sources even say the ongoing monsoons, expected to gain momentum around mid-June, is unlikely to come in the way of the birthday celebrations. Wait and watch whether the Goa Forward chief will send any political message on the day of the birthday bash.

Viriato’s constituency outreach sans Cong leaders raises eyebrows

South Goa MP Captain Viriatbab Fernandes’ visit to various constituencies has become a talking point in political circles, both within the Congress and outside, but for a different reason. While the MP’s visits are aimed at interacting with citizens, listen to their grievances and strengthen the party base, questions are raised why the MP is not accompanied by senior party leaders. Or, is it that the Captain is visiting the constituencies as part of initiative as a Member of Parliament, leaving the task of building and strengthening the party base to the GPCC leadership and the MLAs. Any takers?

2027 showdown in Margao: Kamat legacy faces key decision

A week after Chiraj Naik’s induction in the Congress party, political circles are abuzz with one crucial question – who amongst the father-son duo comprising of Margao MLA Digambarbab Kamat and son Yogiraj will take on the Congress nominee in the 2027 Assembly election. Political observers are indeed on the job to find out whether Diggu will risk fielding son in the 2027 polls or will hand over the baton to Yogiraj in the coming polls. In the event Diggu decides to seek re-election in 2027 to play yet another innings, will Yogiraj wait till the 2032 election to make a political debut? Many a question remains unanswered.

Choked drains, hiked fees: Babu fires salvo at Margao civic body

It was a week when BJP leader and ex-DyCM Babu Ajgaonkar trained his guns at BJP-ruled Margao Municipal Council. On the surface, what seemed to have triggered Babu’s attack on the saffron-controlled civic body was the choked drains in the Gandhi market. Political observers, however, are on the job to find out whether there’s something more than meets the eye. For, Babu not only highlighted the choked drains, but attacked the Council’s recent hike in services. That he did not spare civic chief Damubab or Diggu either has only raised speculations in city political circles. You know why.
