Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s outburst on the floor of the House, demanding the immediate arrest of four Mirabag protesters for displaying placards in the visitors’ gallery, appeared to find an echo at Lohia Maidan in Margao. When Mirabag residents raised protests at the venue against the bhandara, uniformed personnel descended on the historic ground with what seemed to be a clear agenda — to evict the protestors. Whether the Chief Minister had actually issued instructions to clear the protesters remains unclear. However, overzealous police officers repeatedly invoked the Chief Minister while pressuring civil authorities to remove the protestors from the maidan. Questions remain unanswered.
Eviction of protesters sparks political talk
When the police finally succeeded in evicting the Mirabag protesters from Lohia Maidan, a scribe remarked to a police official that the BJP government had detained its own core voters from the South Goa hinterland. Around the same time, a woman protestor, while being led into a waiting police bus by policemen, raised her voice in protest to send a loud and clear message, warning that these very people would teach the BJP a lesson in the coming polls. Interesting, isn’t it?
Venzy silent on Atishi–Churchill meeting
What is the reaction of Aam Aadmi Party Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas to party leader Atishi Marlena’s meeting with his bête noire and arch political rival, Varca strongman Churchill Alemao? Well, it has been over a week since the much-discussed meeting between Atishi and Churchill at the latter’s residence in Varca, yet there has been no reaction or comment from the AAP MLA. Venzy’s silence is deafening, especially since he had lost no opportunity before and after the 2022 Assembly elections to target Churchill, virtually blaming him for all the ills plaguing the Benaulim constituency. Any takers?
Churchill keeps cards close to chest
Varca strongman Churchill Alemao, too, appears in no hurry to spill the beans about his meeting with AAP leader Atishi Marlena. While he has confirmed the widely talked-about meeting, he declined to reveal what exactly transpired during the interaction. Political observers are now wondering whether the meeting involved discussions about Benaulim, Churchilbab’s home turf, or Navelim — where his daughter Valanka Alemao is expected to contest the 2027 Assembly elections. Wait and watch.
