Ayush Nilesh Shirodkar (1528) of Salcete taluka won the Category C (Below 1600) Rating chess tournament at Gitam University in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh which concluded recently.
The tournament was part of the Grandmaster event. Ayush drew with Raghav V of Tamil Nadu in the last round to remain unbeaten. In the penultimate round, he beat Samarateja K of Telngana. This was the first major victory in an all-India tournament for the Rosary College student.
He received the winner's trophy and a cash prize of Rs 50,000. A total of 475 players from all over the country and some international players participated in the event. The second prize was won by Raghav V of Tamil Nadu and the third prize was won by Gnanaseelan Jude Dorison of Sri Lanka.
