Betalbatim SC advanced to the next round of the 25th Benaulim Panchayat Cup after edging past Varca SC 5-4 in a tie-breaker following a hard-fought 1-1 draw at the St. John the Baptist Panchayat Ground, Benaulim. The tournament is being organised by Dando Boys Club, Benaulim.
Betalbatim made a flying start to the encounter, taking the lead as early as the second minute through Dickson Rogtao.
Varca, however, responded positively and gradually worked their way back into the game. Their efforts were rewarded in the 13th minute when Moswel Rebello found the equaliser, ensuring both teams went into halftime level at 1-1.
The second half saw both sides adopt a more cautious approach, with neither willing to take unnecessary risks. Varca's Clayton Lewis was influential in midfield with his vision and distribution, while Alison Rogtao marshalled the Betalbatim defence effectively. Varca goalkeeper Francisco D'Costa also produced several fine saves to deny Betalbatim and keep his side in contention.
With no further goals scored in regulation time, the match was decided through a tie-breaker. Betalbatim held their composure from the spot and emerged 5-4 winners to seal their place in the next round.
Despite ending on the losing side, Clayton Lewis was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance. The award was presented by Rody Fernandes, Sports Secretary of Dando Boys Club, Benaulim.
