Defending champions Dempo Sports Club emerged winners with a decisive 2-1 win against Churchill Brothers FC in the GFA Goa Professional League, at Dempo Academy ground, Ella, on Monday.
The pace of the match was relentless, featuring end to end football. Dempo augmented their lead with Arnold Oliveira playing a pivotal role. A scything cross from the right from U-21 defender Sairon Albuquerque conjured a shot destined for the back of the net in the 23rd minute.
The Red Machine, though undaunted, struggled to break down the resolute Golden Eagle defence in search for an equaliser.
At the other end , Dempo had couple of scoring chances but their forwards wasted from handshaking distance.
The second half witnessed heightened intensity as Dempo intensified their attacks. Aaron Baretto's attempt was thwarted by an impeccable block from rival goalkeeper Eknath Rathod denying Dempo a potential second goal.
Dempo persisted with their offensive strategy but their forwards misfired from close range.
Churchill Brothers FC also pressed forward and their efforts bore fruit when attacking midfielder Joebern Cardozo slotted pass the rival goalkeeper in the 57th minute. Thereafter, the match came to life as both the teams went all out for the match winner.
The final moments were equally engaging. In the 90+2nd minute, Aaron Baretto crafted a tantalizing low cross that found substitute Shreyash Gajanan Naik whose pile driver rooted the rival goalkeeper. Dempo remain in top place in the points table. Dempo SC’s Sairon was named the player of the match and the award was presented by Rajesh Hundekar, Dempo Senior team Physiotherapist.
In GFA 2nd Division League, Guirdolim Club downed Carmel SC 2-0. Parish Youth Nuvem and St. Anthony SC Assolda shared the spoils in 2-2 draw.
In GFA U-13 Division II, YSC Benaulim bet Wilred Leisure 17-2. Canacona SCC beat Union of Chinchinim Villagers 9-1.
GFA 3rd Division League, Ace SA and Patrong SC played out a thrilling 3-3 draw.
