In the fiercely competitive world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), where talent alone isn't enough to succeed, 20-year-old Goan fighter Ashlyn Mascarenhas has emerged as a rising star, winning two gold medals at the prestigious Enyo Women’s Professional Grappling event held in Southampton, UK.

Ashlyn, originally from Betalbatim village in Goa, moved to the UK with her family a few years ago — a journey that quietly set the stage for what would become a spectacular rise in the European BJJ circuit. Her dominant performance in the 69 kg division left spectators stunned as she blended aggression with technical mastery. Now a purple belt, Ashlyn has rapidly ascended from her early days as a white belt, showcasing relentless dedication and growth.

“Winning at Enyo was something special. It was my first time in that kind of arena — everyone was watching. It had to be perfect,” she said, recalling the pressure-filled atmosphere.

Despite the intense physical and psychological demands of combat sports, Ashlyn exhibited remarkable calm and mental resilience.

“I don’t overthink. I do put pressure on myself, but intimidation is part of the game — it’s expected from your opponents,” she explained, highlighting the mental strength needed at the elite level.

Balancing her athletic ambitions with a day job as an assistant teacher at a primary school in London, Ashlyn is clear about her long-term vision. Her ultimate dream? To return to her roots and build a thriving BJJ community in Goa.

“I’ve set my goals — first, to earn my black belt, then compete at the world level. After that, I want to come back to Goa and open an academy to train students,” she shared with determination.

This summer, Ashlyn is preparing for one of her biggest challenges yet — the prestigious IBJJF competition in the UK, a key step in her quest for the black belt, a vital milestone in her professional journey.

Ashlyn’s journey into martial arts began when her father enrolled her in classes for self-defense. What started as a protective measure has transformed into a passion and purpose-driven pursuit.

From a shy young girl to a confident and fierce competitor on the European stage, Ashlyn Mascarenhas is a testament to how perseverance, discipline, and self-belief can turn dreams into reality.
