Ten-day event celebrates intellect, inclusion, and resilience as top differently-abled chess players from around the world compete in Dona Paula

Goa marked a momentous occasion with the inauguration of the 24th World IPCA (International Physically Disabled Chess Association) Individual Chess Championship 2025, being held from July 21 to 31 at the International Centre Goa, Dona Paula. This international championship brings together the world's finest chess players with physical disabilities, showcasing extraordinary intellect, determination, and resilience.
The inaugural ceremony commenced with a warm welcome to participants, dignitaries, and guests, celebrating not just the game of chess but the indomitable spirit of the players. The evening opened with a soulful cultural performance by the talented young individuals from Astha Anand Niketan, setting a vibrant and inclusive tone for the event.
The event was graced by several esteemed dignitaries including Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant, who delivered the inaugural address. In his speech, Dr. Sawant lauded the players for their courage and called the championship “a shining example of inclusion, empowerment, and the true power of the human spirit.”
Delivering the welcome address was Varsha Naik, Director of Empowerment for Persons with Disabilities, who extended heartfelt greetings to the international participants and emphasized Goa’s commitment to inclusive sports and accessibility.
Anand Babu, Secretary of CFPD and FIDE Councillor, and Andrei Gurbanov, President of IPCA, addressed the gathering, acknowledging the championship as a platform that unites nations through strategy, intellect, and sportsmanship. Prasanna Acharya, Secretary of the Department of Empowerment for Persons with Disabilities delivered impactful messages on the importance of equal opportunities and the transformative role of sports for persons with disabilities.
Speaking on the occasion, Guru Pawaskar, State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, stated “It is a matter of great pride for Goa to host the 24th World IPCA Individual Chess Championship 2025. This prestigious event brings together not just some of the finest minds in chess, but also inspiring stories of resilience, determination, and inclusion. We are honoured to welcome players from across the globe to our beautiful state, and we stand committed to supporting equal opportunities for all, both in sport and in society.”
The event also featured the Award Ceremony to felicitate outstanding achievers, followed by addresses from Ashok Dhyan Chand, Guest of Honour, and Subhash Phal Dessai, Organising Chairman, both of whom commended the players and praised Goa’s role as a host of such a significant global event.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Taha Haaziq, Secretary to the Commission for Persons with Disabilities, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, participants, and organizing teams for their unwavering support.
As the championship unfolds over the coming days, it promises not only intense competition on the chessboard but also powerful stories of perseverance, inclusion, and global camaraderie. Goa welcomes the world to witness this remarkable celebration of mind over matter.
