Prominent personalities and football enthusiasts from across Goa paid glowing tributes to Mahesh Lotlikar, former India international and stalwart defender of Dempo SC and Mormugao Port Trust, who passed away at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) on Tuesday after a brief illness. He was 77.

Lotlikar, a key member of the Goa Santosh Trophy-winning team in 1983, leaves behind a legacy of resilience, leadership, and sportsmanship that has inspired generations of footballers.

Born in Chinchinim, Lotlikar quickly earned a reputation as a commanding central defender. Known for his strength, positional awareness, and tactical intelligence, he was a fixture in Dempo’s backline for decades. Over the years, he formed an excellent defensive partnership, first with Nicholas Pereira, and later with David D’Souza, providing the steel that made Dempo’s rearguard one of the toughest to break. “The sturdy Mahesh Lotlikar formed an excellent central defensive pairing… Despite his advancing years, he remained as redoubtable as ever,” noted football insiders recalling his playing days.

While defenders rarely boast a record of memorable goals, Lotlikar was an exception. Among his notable strikes was the match-winner against his former team, Mormugao Port Trust, in the Bandodkar Gold Trophy quarter-finals, and a crucial goal in the Scissors Cup final of 1992 against Indian Telephone Industries, helping Dempo to a 2-1 victory. His presence on the field was characterized by grit, determination, and a knack for rising to decisive moments.

Beyond his playing career, Lotlikar also served as a coach and manager, guiding teams including Dempo Sports Club, Mahindra United, and DSK Shivajians, sharing his tactical acumen and mentoring the next generation of defenders. His influence extended beyond his club, as he inspired countless young footballers in Goa to pursue the sport with discipline and passion.

Lotlikar is survived by his father, his wife Belva, daughter Priyanka, and son Neil, along with countless admirers and protégés who were inspired by his career and character.

The Goa Football Association (GFA) mourned his passing, stating, “The Goa Football Association mourns the death of Mahesh Lotlikar, former India international, Goa Santosh Trophy winner in 1983, a distinguished centre-back who dedicated his life to the game. Mahesh Lotlikar represented Goan and Indian football with great distinction. His commitment, professionalism, and contribution to the sport will always be remembered. On behalf of the Goa Football Association, I extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace,” condoled Dr. Caitano Fernandes, GFA President.

Tributes flowed from across the football fraternity. Alberto Colaco, former AIFF General Secretary, described him as “one of Goa's best central defenders and a very good coach.”

Former India midfielder Lector Mascarenhas recalled, “A great footballer on the field and a wonderful human being off the field. A legend of Dempo SC and Goa with whom I had the pleasure to play.” Former India striker Francis D’Souza said, “He was my very near and dear friend/colleague. Dedicated and talented footballer, who rose to great heights. Great human being who never compromised on principles. With his loving nature, he was loved by all. May he enjoy heavenly glory and the family, with God's grace and strength, bear the irreplaceable loss of Mahesh.”

Franky Baretto, former India defender, said, “It is a sad day for the entire Goan football community. He was a true pillar of Dempo, Goa, and Indian football. Though he has left this world, his legacy will live on forever.” Bruno Coutinho, former India striker, added, “He was a fine defender. May God grant his family the strength to endure this great loss. May his soul rest in peace.” Walter Pereira, FIFA Referee Assessor, noted, “Deeply saddened to hear this news. He was not only a great player but also a truly humble personality.”

Valanka Alemao, First FIFA Women Committee member, described him as “A powerhouse defender from Chinchinim, he was the ‘iron man’ of the Goan backline during the 70s and 80s. His loss is felt by everyone who remembers the grit and passion he brought to the pitch. My heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends. May God grant him eternal rest.” Samir Naik, head coach of Dempo SC, said, “Big loss for us Goan football. Great player and very humble person.”
