Goan-origin Chanel Tiana Rebello won the Girls Under-17 doubles title along with her partner Sharon Sagaya at the MAK Open Badminton Tournament 2024 held at Beta Cambridge School Wukair over the weekend.

The three-day tournament saw some 300 players of different nationalities competing in 28 different categories and in different age groups.

Chanel, who trains at Cosmos Academy, and Sharon Sagaya who gets training at Prime Sports topped in the Under-17 event but could not repeat the same feat in the Under-15 category where they finished runners-up.

In the Under-17 they defeated Parvathi Nambiar and Rajika Ramesan of NVBS, while in the Under-15 they lost to Ann Jithu and Anusree Shine of Prime Sports.

Chanel, whose father hails from Varca and mother from Raia, also finished third in the Girls Under-15 singles category.

Badminton has a big following in Qatar, and players of different nationalities and different age groups take part in the tournament.

The MAK Open Badminton is the first of a series of tournaments which kicked off the new badminton season in Qatar.

This weekend another tournament Qatar Summer Badminton Championship 2024 Season-2 is taking place for two days today and tomorrow.

The tournament organised by Knight Riders Badminton Club is held under the aegis of the Association of Badminton Academies in Qatar.

Next weekend is the Indian Sports Centre (ISC) event. ISC is an apex body coming under the aegis of Indian Embassy Qatar and they will host their tournament from October 8 to 12.

For the ISC tournament some guest players are coming from India, UAE, Bahrain and Indonesia, informed some officials from ISC.
