They’ve returned home triumphant from the SAFF Cup—and among them, a rising star stands tall. Sixteen-year-old Jodric Abranches, a lanky defender from Verna, has been hailed as one of the brightest prospects to join the India U-16 football squad in recent times.

Jodric, who also represents Dempo SC, has impressed fans and coaches alike with his composure, grit, and defensive prowess. Speaking to The Goan Everyday, he credited India U-16 head coach Bibiano Fernandes for his growth.

“The coach gives me huge confidence. He has always backed me,” Jodric said.

That trust has paid dividends. The young Goan has consistently delivered standout performances throughout the tournament, reinforcing the belief that he’s a player to watch in the years ahead.

Reflecting on the team’s journey, Jodric added: “These are our best times as a team. We've spent time together like a family. The atmosphere has been wonderful, and all of us gave our best in the SAFF Cup.”

His commitment was evident in every match.

“Before the match, I just focused on giving my best and making my country proud,” he shared. “We were all driven by a different level of passion. I’m happy to have scored—it’s something that will definitely make my parents proud.”

Jodric also spoke candidly about his aspirations: “My dream is to play in the Indian Super League and for the national team. It would be a dream come true for me.”

Describing his role in the championship-winning squad, the young defender added,

“My aim was to guard the citadel and bring smiles to everyone’s faces. The time had come for us to prove ourselves—and we did it.”
