Sarzora pip Navelim in Tiger Cup opener

Nigel Fernandes scored a fine brace as Sarzora Sports Club edged past Navelim Sporting Club 4-3 in the opening match of Goa Tiger Cup 2022, an inter-village knockout style tournament which kicked off at Our Lady of Rosary Church ground, Navelim, Salcete on Monday.

At half time Navelim SC were leading 2-1. Shario Gomes and Kevin Vaz were the other scorers for Sarzora. Navelim put up a tough fight and scored through Anil Shivalkar, Darren Peixoto and Melistion Dias.

Maharashtra Minister, Aaditya Thackeray who is also the President of Mumbai Football Association (MFA), was the chief guest at the inaugural match during which he unveiled the trophies. At the same time, kits were handed over to the teams.

Former Indian footballer and AIFF Coach Educator, Caetano Pinho; Technical Director of FC Goa, Derrick Pereira; Western Indian Football Association Vice-President, Malojiraje Chhatrapati; Minister of Higher and Technical Education (Maharashtra); CEO and Manager Aarvali Project, Fomento Resorts & Hotels Ltd, Akash Timblo, Sadanand Desai, Uday Samant and a priest from Navelim Church, Fr Dylan Dcosta were also present to grace the occasion.

The inaugural edition of the Goa Tiger Cup will see Goan inter-village and veterans teams fight it out for the coveted trophy in Goa from May 16-29. On Tuesday, Candolim Veterans will take on Fatorda Veterans at Dr Gustavo Monteiro Football Ground, Candolim while Betalbatim Sports Club will meet Sao Jose De Areal SC at Our Lady of Rosary Church ground, Navelim. Meanwhile, Calangute Association will face PVC Parra at Poriat Football Ground, Calangute. All matches will kick off at 4.30 pm.
