The Goa Football Association (GFA) president Dr Caitano Fernandes on Monday revealed that three new clubs will be part of the Goan topflight division, the Goa Professional League.
While two clubs -- Pax of Nagoa and Geno SC -- have been granted the opportunity to participate in this year's edition, the third club -- owned by Dattaraj V Raj Salgaocar -- will join the league from the 2024-25 season.
"We are thrilled to announce a major expansion of the Goa Professional League with the addition of three new clubs. Pax of Nagoa, Geno SC and Dattaraj V Raj Salgaocar submitted bids for direct entry in Goa Professional League. This marks a big day for Goa football, and we are confident that these new entrants will add fervour and competitiveness to the league," Dr Fernandes announced at a press conference.
Both Geno SC and Dattaraj V Raj Salgaocar have paid Rs 50 lakhs each being corporate clubs while Pax of Nagoa had to pay Rs 30 lakhs for their bids. Two clubs were expected to join the Goa Professional League. But the bid from the third club was unexpected.
"Furthermore, the GFA has demonstrated their commitment to supporting referees and promoting the highest standards of officiating by increasing the referee remuneration by an impressive 30-40 per cent from this season onwards," the GFA president announced.
In addition to the club expansions, the GFA has made significant strides in settling past dues, further underlining their dedication to ensuring the financial stability and growth of the league, Dr Fernandes said. He revealed that the association has successfully cleared the pending dues of the last four seasons, setting a strong foundation for the upcoming season.
"The announcement also highlighted the association's proactive approach in securing sponsorships, with expected revenue of Rs 3 crores from sponsors and other sources for the upcoming season. This financial support will be instrumental in enhancing the league's infrastructure and promoting the overall growth of football in the region," the association said in a statement.
Moreover, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the sport, the GFA has appointed Savio Medeira as a co-opted member, honouring him in the eminent player category which was vacant for over a year.
