Churchill Brothers FC thrashed Velsao Sports and Cultural Club 5-1 in the Goa Professional League at Nagoa Panchayat Sports Complex on Friday.
The early exchanges were even, with both teams creating scoring opportunities but unable to find the back of the net. In the 16 minute, defender George D'Souza broke the deadlock for the Red Machines. At the other end, Velsao were handicapped with the absence of striker Ronaldo Pereira, who received two yellow cards, and were unable to break down the Churchill defence.
Aaron Baretto increased their tally with a clinical finish in the 22nd minute. In the 26th minute, midfielder Schubert Pereira made it 3-0. The score remained 3-0 in favour of Churchill at half time.
Churchill Brothers had a couple of scoring chances but their forwards ran out of ideas after reaching the danger zone. Aaron Baretto struck in the 50th minute to register his brace.
In the 53rd minute, Joebern Cardozo scored the fifth goal for Churchill in the 53rd minute. Earlier, Meuton Fernandes converted a spot kick, sending the rival goalkeeper the wrong way.
Earlier, a minute's silence was observed in memory of Brazil legend Pele, who passed away on Thursday.
