A tragic incident occurred in Madhlamaj, Mandrem, around 4:45 PM, when a massive mango tree fell on a passing two-wheeler and a four-wheeler. The biker, Vishal Krushnanath Salkar (Mapusa), sustained severe injuries and died before receiving treatment. The four occupants of the car escaped with minor injuries.
The tree, believed to be over a century old, collapsed without warning, although some locals reported hearing creaking sounds around 2 PM. It fell across the road, damaging both vehicles. Another parked two-wheeler was also struck. Fortunately, vendors who usually sit beneath the tree during the day had left the area.
Emergency response was delayed. Despite calls, an ambulance did not arrive on time, and locals rushed the injured Salkar to Tuem Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Fire brigade personnel, aided by locals and panchayat members including Deputy Sarpanch Sampada Azgaonkar and former Sarpanch Minguel Fernandes, worked to clear the fallen tree. MLA Jit Arolkar’s staff also assisted on site.
Concerns have been raised over several old trees along Mandrem’s roads. Residents demand immediate inspection and action by the district administration to prevent future incidents. MLA Arolkar expressed grief over the incident and confirmed discussions with the government to set up an independent fire station in Mandrem. He also noted legal challenges in cutting trees without owners’ consent, urging for a streamlined process to address dangerous trees near roads and homes.
