Canacona to get ₹28 crore indoor stadium for year-round sports: Tawadkar

CANACONA

Canacona MLA and Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Tribal Welfare and Art & Culture, Ramesh Tawadkar, has announced that the proposed ₹28 crore indoor stadium at Balram Residential High School, Amone–Poinguinim, is aimed at promoting year-round sporting activities, including during the monsoon season.

He was speaking at the inaugural function of the three-day Aamdar Chashak 1.0 held at the newly inaugurated SAG Shristhal ground on Monday evening, in the presence of DSYA Director and SAG Executive Director Ajay Gaude and other dignitaries, including panchayat representatives.

Tawadkar clarified that the decision to develop the indoor stadium at Amone was based on the need for a residential sports setup, allowing athletes to train early in the morning at around 6 am—something not feasible for non-residential institutions. He added that the facility would ensure better utilisation of coaches and infrastructure under the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG).

Responding to criticism over the project, he said the stadium is meant for the benefit of the people of Canacona and not personal use, stressing the government’s focus on strengthening sports academies across the state.

He also announced upcoming sports infrastructure developments, including efforts to acquire land at Mokhardamoll-Bhatpal for a new academy with a swimming pool, and the exchange of SAG land at Dhargal in Pernem. Additionally, work on the Potkem ground in Poinguinim is expected to be completed before December 2026.

Other projects include development of Talpona ground, refurbishment of Karvem ground in Gaondongrim and Agonda with an estimated ₹30 lakh each, and upgrading the Shri Gaitonde Mini Sports Complex at Chaudi with a stage, fencing, and toilet facilities.
