Mandar wins 6th late Venkatesh and Sumathi Shanbhag chess tournament

The 6th edition of the Late Venkatesh and Sumathi Shanbhag Rolling Trophy Chess Tournament, organized by the Mormugao Taluka Chess Association (MTCA), successfully concluded on October 19, at St. Theresa's Hall, Mangor Hill. The two-day rapid chess event, held in memory of Sukant Shanbhag’s parents, saw participation from 252 players across Goa.

The tournament was inaugurated on October 18. Chief Sponsor and Guest Sukant Shanbhag expressed appreciation for the event as a heartfelt tribute to his parents. He was joined by MTCA officials—President Sujan Sukhtankar, Secretary Deepak Gawas, and Treasurer Mukesh Adhia.

The event was conducted smoothly under the guidance of Chief Arbiter IA Swapnil Hoble and Deputy Chief Arbiter FA Tanishq Kavlekar.

The prize distribution ceremony on October 19 was attended by several dignitaries, including Sukant Shanbhag, MTCA officials, Former AICF Treasurer Kishor M. Bandekar, Tournament Director Mukund Kambli, and SAG Coach IA Sanjay Kavlekar.

Mandar P. Lad of Bardez Taluka emerged as the tournament winner. The top three positions were as follows: Mandar P. Lad (Bardez Taluka) – Winner; Rishikesh Parab (Mormugao Taluka) – 1st Runner-up; Saras Summer Powar (Salcete Taluka) – 2nd Runner-up

Players securing positions 4 to 20 were: Shubh Vishnu Borkar, Adarsh Anand Patekar, Joshua Mark Telles, Tanad Anil Bandodkar, Aarth Siddhesh Shenvi Karapurkar, Vihaan Tari, Aarav Chopdekar, Prayank Gaonkar, Nathan Jess Cardozo, Nagesh Nayak, Rishit Gawas, Rajveer Patil, Erwin Albuquerque, Anarva Singh, Rejmon Gavin Fernandes, Amogh S. Naik, and Kiran Shantaram Chopdekar.

During the closing ceremony, MTCA felicitated Former President CA Kishor Bandekar in recognition of his long and dedicated service to the game of chess.
