Margao Sports Club advanced to the quarterfinals of the Fr Agnelo Inter-Village Football Tournament after registering a narrow 1-0 victory over San Jose de Areal Sports Club at the Panchayat Grounds, Avedem. Organised by the Fr Agnelo Sports and Cultural Club, Paroda, the match saw Margao SC take an early lead in the 10th minute through a well-placed strike that deceived the goalkeeper. San Jose de Areal mounted pressure in the second half in search of an equaliser, but the Margao defence held firm to secure the win.

FC Mugalli down Blue Star Irgorjeawado
MARGAO: FC Mugalli progressed to the next round of the Areal inter-ward football tournament with a 2-0 win over Blue Star Irgorjeawado at the Areal ground on Sunday. The tournament is organised by the Kotu Boys of Areal. Marcus Mascarenhas opened the scoring for FC Mugalli, while Beckham Faleiro added the second goal to seal the victory.

Honour to represent Goa: Umpire Kambali
MARGAO: Goa hockey umpire Riyaz Kambali officiated in the quarterfinals, semifinals and final of the 52nd All India Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gold and Silver Cup Hockey Tournament (Seniors), held in Nanded. Kambali was appointed as an umpire for the national-level tournament and handled several high-pressure matches during the event, including the decisive final.
Speaking about his experience, Kambali said it was an honour to represent Goa at such a prestigious tournament. “I am proud to contribute to building the name of Goan hockey at the national level,” he said. The All India Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gold and Silver Cup is one of the country’s prominent senior hockey tournaments and attracts teams and officials from across India.

Margao CC in Lolyekar cricket final
MARGAO: Margao Cricket Club (MCC) reached the final of the Nanda Lolyekar leather ball cricket tournament after defeating Polem CC by six wickets at Nirakar Maidan, Dapot Mashem, on Sunday. The tournament is organised by Mashem CC. Polem CC were bowled out for 93 in 27.1 overs, with Vedant Pisat scoring 16. MCC chased down the target in 15 overs, scoring 95 for four, led by Sumiran Amonkar’s 27. MCC will face Arlem CC in the final.

GSO honours sports personalities
MARGAO: The Good Shepherd Organisation, Fatorda (GSO), felicitated sports personalities from across Goa for their contribution to the field of sports at a function held at the Grace Church compound in Margao. Fr Joe Rodrigues, parish priest of Grace Church, Margao, was the chief guest and presented the honours. Among those felicitated were Mario Pereira, Raja Phir, Sam Sanatan Fernandes, Aditya Kankonkar, Ashay Abhay Korde, Jaison K Mathew, Our Lady of Mother of the Poor High School, and Disability Alliance Inclusive for Goa. The event was attended by sports officials and organisation members.

Ponda Open Rapid chess on Jan 4
PANAJI: Ponda Friends Circle Sports & Cultural Club, in association with the Ponda Taluka Chess Association and under the auspices of the Goa Chess Association, will organise a Ponda Taluka-level Open Rapid Chess Tournament on January 4, 2026. The tournament will be held at Shree Nakteshwar Hall, Upper Bazaar, Ponda, and will begin at 9 am.
The competition is open to players from Ponda taluka. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in the open category, while trophies will also be given to players finishing from fourth to 15th place. In addition, age-category prizes will be awarded in the Under-7, Under-9, Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 categories.
