MARGAO: St Anthony Assolda sealed a spot in the semifinals of the Areal Panchayat Cup with a narrow 1–0 win over United Boys of Ambaulim in a thrilling quarterfinal clash held at the Padribhat ground, Sao Jose de Areal, on Friday. The tournament is being organised by Sao Jose de Areal.
Both teams played out a goalless first half despite creating several chances, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats with fast-paced, end-to-end football.
The breakthrough came in the 55th minute when Vitorino Fernandes rose above the defenders to head in a pinpoint cross from Frazer Gomes, sparking celebrations among the Assolda supporters.
Ambaulim fought back with urgency, launching repeated attacks in search of an equaliser. Felixson Fernandes came close with a powerful strike that was brilliantly saved, while Sowel Fernandes hit the post in the dying minutes, narrowly missing a deserved leveller.
Vitorino Fernandes was named Man of the Match for his decisive goal and all-round performance. The award was presented by former national player Antonio Mateus (SJ de Areal).
