The Goa Women’s Volleyball Revival Day 2026, organised by the Goa Masters Women Volleyball Association in collaboration with Santa Barbara Sports Club, Santa Cruz, turned into a heartwarming celebration of the sport and its enduring legacy.
Held under the theme “From Legends to Future Stars,” the festival drew an overwhelming response, with more than 70 players participating across age groups.
The event’s biggest highlight was its unique intergenerational participation, bringing together players aged between 14 and 67 years in six evenly balanced teams. Schoolgirls, college athletes, working professionals, former state and national players, recreational returnees and veteran stalwarts shared the same court, creating a memorable experience for everyone involved.
“This was not merely a sporting event. It was a revival of memories, friendships, mentorship and hope for the future of women’s volleyball in Goa,” said Betty D’Silva, president of the association.
A special felicitation ceremony honoured legendary women volleyball players Bina Wagle, Lumen Botelho, Conception Pereira and Betty D’Silva for their immense contribution and achievements in the sport over the years.
All participating players and organisers were also recognised for their efforts towards reviving women’s volleyball in the state.
Participants travelled from across Goa, including Agonda, Pernem, Vasco, Valpoi, Ponda, Panjim and Margao, reflecting the widespread passion that still exists for the game.
Speaking about the association’s future plans, secretary Melinda Pereira said initial volleyball training centres are likely to be set up in Panjim, Margao, Ponda and Mapusa. The centres aim to nurture young girls at the grassroots level while also promoting recreational and masters-level competitions for women across different age groups.
Former volleyball player and Goa University Director of Sports, Milton Fernandes, said the association is exploring partnerships with sports clubs, schools, colleges and government agencies such as Sports Authority of Goa and Khelo India to strengthen the sport’s development pathway.
In another major initiative, the organisers announced plans to conduct a Coaches Training Programme between October-November 2026 with reputed trainers from the United States of America. Advisor Kennedy D’Silva said the programme aims to build a strong pool of qualified coaches capable of producing quality players and ensuring long-term growth of volleyball in Goa.
The organisers also expressed gratitude to players, families, clubs, volunteers, supporters, media personnel and sports enthusiasts whose efforts contributed to the success of the event.
