Release, don’t cling

We have been made to believe that our worth is defined by our desires which will make us happy. However, it’s often the act of letting go of these desires that truly leads to contentment and inner peace.

Greed and desire are like sirens, tempting us with promises of fulfillment and pleasure. They have an uncanny ability to divert our gaze from the present moment, robbing us of the joy of life unfolding before us. They lead us down paths of materialism and endless consumption, often leaving us feeling empty and unsatisfied.

It reminds me the trick how hunters catch monkeys with a surprisingly simple trap. All that’s needed is a jar with a little opening fastened to a tree that holds the favourite nuts for monkey. Next, the hunter makes a tiny hole at the top that is just big enough for a monkey’s hand to fit through. The monkeys soon discover the tempting nuts within the jar. They thrust their hands into the jar, grasping the treasure within. Their closed fists, however, prove to be their undoing, for the opening is too small to withdraw their clenched fingers while clutching the nuts. The monkey isn’t deterred enough to drop the nuts and flee by the mere sight of the approaching hunter. And eventually, the monkey is caught by the hunter.

Desires are shiny, seductive and hard to refuse, just like the fruit in the monkey trap. In life, we often encounter desires that promise pleasure, success or fulfillment. They can be as simple as material possessions, the desire for recognition, or the pursuit of perfection. Just as the monkeys were lured by the promise of the fruit, we too can be captivated by the allure of our desires. Our attachments, much like the clenched fists of the monkeys can become our prison. When we are unwilling to let go, we remain trapped in patterns that no longer serve us and prevent us from experiencing growth and true freedom.

We become fixated on the desires believing that our happiness depends solely on their attainment. Releasing your desires doesn’t mean giving up on your dreams. On the contrary, it’s an act of liberating yourself from the emotional burden of attachment .It’s about approaching with a different mindset. True freedom lies in our ability to let go of what no longer serves us. By releasing our attachments, we create space for personal growth, self-discovery, and the pursuit of what truly matters to us.

Minimalism and cultivating gratitude is a philosophy that encourages us to simplify our lives by decluttering our physical and mental spaces. Expressing gratitude to others and taking moments to reflect on your blessings can be highly effective .We make space for what is really important by letting rid of unnecessary excess.
