Sadu's: A place that warms hearts and palates alike

Just a stone's throw away from the historic Ramnath Temple in Ponda lies a culinary gem that has stood the test of time: Mahesh Bar and Restaurant, affectionately known as Sadu's. For over six decades, this charming eatery has been a beloved fixture in the local community, offering a taste of traditional Goan cuisine in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Tradition meets taste

Founded by the late Sadanand Kerkar, fondly remembered as Sadu, and now expertly managed by his nephew Dheeraj Kerkar, Sadu's is more than just a restaurant – it's a living testament to the rich culinary heritage of Goa. Stepping into Sadu's is like stepping back in time, into a world where good food and heartfelt hospitality reign supreme.

From spice to plate

At the heart of Sadu's menu is their legendary Goan-style chicken chilly, aptly named Sadu's Chilly, a tantalising dish crafted with love and traditional spices, a true testament to the culinary expertise of its namesake. As Dheeraj fondly recalls, "It's a dish we make from scratch, right down to the masala. The dish is named after my uncle as he was the one behind the creation of the dish that has made this place famous."

Generations of flavor

For Dheeraj and his family, Sadu's isn't just a business; it's a way of life. With their hands-on approach and unwavering dedication, they've created a space that feels like home for both locals and visitors alike. As Dheeraj Kerkar proudly shares, "Our business is run by our family. My mother, my wife, my uncle – we all work together as a team. It's become more than just a business; it's a way of life for us." And it's this dedication to tradition and authenticity that sets Sadu's apart from the rest.

Where food tells stories

But it's not just about the food at Sadu's; it's about the experience. With its cosy ambience and warm hospitality, it's a place where locals gather for lively conversations over plates of piping hot home-cooked food.

And it's not only the locals who rave about Sadu's. From near and far, visitors make the journey to savour the flavours of Goan cuisine at this iconic restaurant. Sadu's continues to draw in crowds even on the hottest days. As a satisfied customer says, "There may be fancier restaurants out there, but it's the food at Sadu's that steals the show."

Amster Desouza from St Cruz, says he can never get enough of the place. "Hearing the local Goan talks, food fish, the famous chilly obviously with pao, and the old school vibes is what keeps bringing me back.”

For Rajat Kerker from Saligao, Sadu's has a special place in his heart. "The timeless, old-school vibe transports me to another era every time I step through the door," he says. "And their Sadu's Chilly dish? It’s a culinary masterpiece that never fails to impress."

And for Aahan Phillips from Old Goa, the place holds an even deeper meaning. “Sadu’s, our cherished local haunt, holds memories as rich as its flavours. My best friend and I frequented this restaurant, finding solace in its comforting hustling bustling ambience, always having some sport or the other playing on the TV. We'd always order our favourite, the chicken chilly and some fried fish paired with a few cold beverages and then order some more to take home. Tragically, my friend's presence is now a cherished memory, lost to a cruel twist of fate in an accident. Yet, Sadu’s holds a special place in my heart, transcending mere food and drink.”

Nostalgia on a plate

So whether you're craving a taste of authentic Goan flavours or simply seeking a cosy spot to unwind, make sure to pay a visit to Sadu's. Because here, amidst the aromas of spices and the echoes of laughter, you'll find more than just a restaurant – you'll find a place where memories are made and cherished for a lifetime. As Dheeraj Kerkar reminds us, "The happiness we get from seeing the smiles of our loyal customers is priceless – it is the true measure of our success."
