Cyclone Tauktae brought the turtle nesting season to a premature end in Canacona taluka on Sunday.

The Turtle Rehabilitation Centres run by the Forest Department (wildlife) had taken all precautions to protect the Olive Ridley eggs, but they could not withstand the fury of Cyclone Tauktae and five pits containing the protected eggs were washed away by the sea.

According to RFO (Wildlife), Canacona Anant Velip, the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre had recently released hatchlings from 31 nests at Agonda and three nests at Galgibaga.

However, the eggs from four remaining pits at Agonda beach and one pit at Galgibaga beach were left to be hatched, but they got washed away on Sunday.

The cyclone on Sunday blew away both sheds at the Turtle Rehabilitation Centres in Agonda and Galgibaga, leaving nothing except for a signboard of the forest department.
